Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. At a time often marked by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and propelled it a breakout hit.
In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who found the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about following this charming family go about their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to evolve comedy past its current layer of irony. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially be part of that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to experience the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
