A teenager from the Land Down Under has faced legal proceedings after allegedly vandalizing a sizable art piece of a legendary being by affixing googly eyes to it.
The 19-year-old, aged 19, appeared via phone at the local court in the state of South Australia on that day, charged with one count of property damage.
In a statement at the time of the September incident, the municipal authorities said that CCTV footage captured a person putting fake eyes on the artwork, which locals have nicknamed the “Blue Blob”.
The accused did not enter a plea and told the judge she was ill, as reported by news outlets, with the judge advising her to secure a legal representative before her next court date in the final month of the year.
The following day the reported event, the local mayor stated that repairs to the much-loved public artwork would be costly as the adhesive eyes could not be detached without damaging the sculpture.
“This intentional vandalism to a valued community art is inappropriate and disrespectful,” City of Mount Gambier mayor remarked in mid-September. “It is not innocent amusement, it is costly - it is also frustrating to those people of our community who have welcomed Cast in Blue.”
She said the council would pursue the “substantial” restoration expenses from those responsible for the damage.
When the artwork was first proposed, it drew mixed reactions from the area residents due to its price tag and design.
Priced at A$136,000 (eighty-nine thousand US dollars; sixty-eight thousand pounds), the sculpture represents a legendary giant animal, with the creators inspired by an prehistoric anteater-like marsupial found in nearby caverns that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.
