Three members of law enforcement perished and no fewer than 15 others got wounded in a seemingly intentional blast caused by gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The blast took place as officers and emergency crews went into the house close to Verona to enforce an removal notice for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three deceased individuals were members of the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

Two individuals were arrested at the location and one more individual who fled subsequent to the blast was located soon after. The trio have been admitted to hospital.

The detonation could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the area displayed the property left as a mass of wreckage.

ā€œThis moment calls for sorrow,ā€ commented the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to remove the three family members in the previous occasions.

Background and Motive

The president of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, stated the property was under an court order due to financial obligations accumulated by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to talk with the family members who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the officers came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think one of the residents caused the detonation.

ā€œUpon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,ā€ local police chief Claudio Papagno told reporters.

A propane tank had been set off, and the explosion immediately struck our personnel,ā€ he added.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the property, the interior minister said.

Casualties and Damage

The wounded by the blast consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three members of national police and a firefighter.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

The prosecutor believed the blast had taken place on a floor above the doorway and informed the press it was a ā€œpremeditated and voluntary homicideā€. Shortly before the blast, he said personnel had ā€œheard a whistle, presumably the gas canisters being activatedā€.

Community Reaction

ā€œAll of us understood the scenario was critical,ā€ local residents stated to reporters, adding that the trio had earlier warned to ā€œblow themselves upā€ rather than be evicted.

ā€œThe incident exacted a ā€˜dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.ā€

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in commemorating the three men who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
