A familiar auction figure is a regular participant at the traditional bidding war.

A bulky bluefin tuna made headlines at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the market's opening auction of the calendar year.

The winning bid for the 243-kilogram fish was submitted by the company of a nationwide sushi restaurant group, which runs restaurants throughout Japan and internationally.

"The year's tuna brings good luck," remarked the business owner, a notable bidder at the traditional first sale.

Known as the Tuna King, this businessman is famous for making record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile year-opening auctions.

Auction Shock and Record-Setting Past

After the auction, the successful bidder told journalists that he was "taken aback at the amount," stating, "I believed we would be able to purchase it a little for less, but the price escalated in no time."

This most recent acquisition tops his previous notable purchases:

  • He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He bid 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).

Despite previously saying that he thought he "overdid it," he has now proceeded to break his personal record another time.

An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids

The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously known for exceptionally high prices. Last year, the first tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by another food company, which stated the fish would be available at its locations across Japan.

The frenetic energy at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has transformed into a popular event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.

Swift Service

The extremely valuable tuna was promptly processed for diners at the entrepreneur's sushi restaurants shortly after the auction ended.

"I sense like I've commenced the year in a positive way after tasting something so auspicious as the year starts," shared one satisfied customer.
