Elena Rybakina Upsets Sabalenka to Win Historic £4 Million Payout
Elena Rybakina earned her 45th hard-court triumph of 2025
Rybakina won the biggest prize in women's tennis all time by defeating top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets at the WTA Finals.
Rybakina produced a impressive performance to beat four-time Grand Slam champion her opponent in two sets in Saudi Arabia.
Since each competitor advanced through the tournament undefeated, the reward on offer was a historic £3.98m – the highest prize offering in women's tennis the sport's history.
This amount exceeds the £3.74m the Belarusian received for winning the New York major, which was the highest-paying Grand Slam in 2025.
"This has been an incredible tournament," commented the Kazakh player.
"Truly couldn't have predicted this outcome so to reach the final was just unbelievable."

The champion, who was the world number six, hit sixteen winners during a impressive first-set performance.
Rybakina fended off two chances before winning every point in the sixth game to take the break and held her serve to seal the opening set.
As the second set progressed, Sabalenka defended another two opportunities at four-all to shift the balance in her favor.
However, having worked so hard to disrupt Rybakina's rhythm, the top seed failed to capitalize by squandering a pair of chances in the next game to level the second set at five-all.
Her inability to force a decider impacted her tiebreak performance, with the Kazakh taking every point to claim the title.
This win, Rybakina's sixth over her rival, means Rybakina will move up one spot in the WTA rankings to number five in the world.
An emotional the runner-up appeared to be in tears as she sat with her coaching team shortly after the match.
"It was not the finest display from me today but Rybakina you were certainly the better player," the Belarusian told the crowd.
"You really smashed me on court. I'm pleased to see you play your best tennis. Enjoy this beautiful title."
