Harvard ex-president Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board

Board Resignation
The economist stated he would retreat from public roles after legislative body disclosed his repeated messages with Epstein

One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is leaving the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a collection of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became widely known.

The economist commented in an announcement that he was "thankful for the chance to have contributed, enthusiastic about the potential of the company, and look forward observing their advancement".

Summers, who previously presided over the prestigious university, announced on Monday that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Message Exchange

The recently released communications showed that Summers communicated with the financier until the day before his 2019 arrest for alleged trafficking of underage individuals.

In another announcement, the AI firm stated it respected Summers' choice to step down.

"We appreciate his many contributions and the perspective he provided to the governing body," OpenAI remarked.

Legislative Background

This development arrives after the entire Congress of Congress agreed on recently to approve a measure that would mandate the Department of Justice to disclose its files on the case.

The bill will subsequently move to the administration of the White House for endorsement. Trump has indicated he plans to endorse the legislation, after changing his position on the issue following pressure from his supporters.

Message Details

A group of Epstein-related correspondence made public by the House Oversight Committee recently mentioned several high-profile figures in the billionaire's previous network, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.

The communications showed that Summers and the financier often met for meals, with Epstein often attempting to connect Summers to prominent world leaders.

Personal Response

After the correspondence were made available with the general audience, Summers said he assumed "complete accountability for my poor decision to persist in corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".

He continued that he hoped "to rebuild confidence and repair relationships with the persons nearest to me".

Previous Positions

Summers held senior posts under party leaders; serving as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the White House economic team under President Obama.

He led the university from five years and is still a professor there. When declaring his withdrawal from public commitments previously on this week, he indicated he would continue his educational duties.

Additional Consequences

Following the economist's announcement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank in Washington where the professor was a senior fellow, confirmed that the economist was no longer associated with the institution.

He joined the leadership of OpenAI, which develops the AI chatbot, in last year - following a defeated move to oust its chief executive OpenAI's head.
