Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he has been listed as critical but stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “But I will say this, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”

NYPD shared surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims according to reports.

The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday near the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse just had a child.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was projected as a key part of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a practice session on early August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in last year and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
