In the wake of a pivotal victory at the Lusail Grand Prix, the Red Bull driver has significantly narrowed the deficit in the title race. He is now positioned just twelve points behind leader Lando Norris and ahead of teammate Oscar Piastri, everything is in place for a nail-biting three-way season finale at the famous Yas Marina Circuit.
The Dutchman's most recent win was far from straightforward. Although he delivered a superb drive for his team, the result was significantly impacted by a controversial strategic move from the McLaren team. Choosing to stay on track during an initial safety car period, McLaren presented the advantage to Verstappen, who capitalized perfectly.
"I'm thrilled, I'm ready to go there and fight for it," the driver said. "My mindset is with just positive energy. I will give everything I can but simultaneously, even without the title, I still know that I had an incredible season."
This philosophy as he puts it takes a lot of the weight of expectation. The goal for the last race is straightforward: to get the most from everything possible from himself and the machine.
What makes this late-season charge truly astonishing is how far he has come back. Following the Dutch Grand Prix in late August, he was a staggering over a century of points behind the then-leader his rival and had publicly written off his title chances.
The shift began with substantial car developments introduced by his team at the Monza. Changes to the vehicle's underbody and front wing finally addressed persistent performance deficits, allowing the driver to push to the limit with the chassis once more.
Following those upgrades, his form has been utterly spectacular, racking up five wins and several top-three finishes. He made sure to highlight the teamwork behind this success.
"We've won races where maybe it seemed unlikely, through the right call as a unit," Verstappen added. "My collaboration with my team on the pit wall and the whole team... we are really well integrated."
Ahead of the head to Abu Dhabi, the points situation is utterly compelling.
The intensity now shifts on McLaren, who have let a big points cushion disappear due to unfortunate events, including a double disqualification in Las Vegas. For Verstappen, this position brings a sense of freedom, transforming the last event into a simple shot at the title with nothing to lose.
