The English golfer Wins Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Versus Tommy Fleetwood
Aaron Rai displayed remarkable composure to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense playoff after a topsy-turvy last day of play.
The Englishman sank a decisive birdie putt from around eight foot to seal the win, repeating his only previous tournament success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff win against the same opponent.
Final Round Excitement
The champion started the final round with a single stroke advantage over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that included seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.
Fleetwood edged a stroke clear with two holes remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but his rival pulled level again on the 17th and then missed a 10-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the final green.
Play-Off Decider
That led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner triumphed to claim the title and $1.5m (ÂŁ1.13m) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a world-class player and an even more person. To compete alongside him the last two days was truly memorable,” said the winner, the current world No 30. “You’re so focused on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s hard to put into words at the present how it feels. It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”
Other Contenders
Rory McIlroy found himself a bit too far to do, coming up a stroke short in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a stunning 10-under final round of 62. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever score on the DP World Tour, including eight birdies and one eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdie putts of his as well, but his chances of topping the leaderboard were hit by a dropped shot on the twelfth. English golfer Mansell produced an excellent final-round 63 to end up tied for fifth with Australia’s Hillier.
