It might not have been at the identical stature as sparing holiday birds, but the county's top official experienced a presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life away from worry.”
The event, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, contributed by a first responder, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “six-seven” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The craze became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently declared “6-7” its top term for the year.
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: vibrant, varied, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Each year, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and cafecito as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
