Trump Compels Thailand to Reaffirm Commitment to Cambodian Truce with Tariff Warnings

Washington has exerted influence on the Thai administration to recommit to a ceasefire agreement with the Cambodian side, indicating that trade negotiations could be paused as attempts are made to prevent a Trump-mediated ceasefire arrangement from collapsing.

Rising Border Hostilities

In recent days, Thailand announced it was putting on hold the truce agreement, alleging Cambodian forces of planting new explosives along the mutual frontier, including one that reportedly injured a Thai soldier on patrol, who lost a foot in the blast.

Since then, a fatality occurred and several others wounded by exchanges of fire along the border between the two nations, sparking fears of a fresh wave of tit-for-tat fighting.

US Trade Pressure

Over the weekend, a representative from Thailand's foreign office told journalists that a letter from the U.S. trade office announcing the suspension of trade deal talks was received on Friday night.

The spokesperson referenced the letter as saying that trade negotiations – which are addressing a US tariff of 19% – could restart once Thailand reaffirmed its commitment to implementing the joint ceasefire declaration.

“Trade talks are ongoing and distinct from frontier matters,” said a different official representative.

President’s Economic Warning

Speaking to the press on Air Force One as he flew to Florida on the end of the week, the US leader suggested that he had employed tariff warnings in discussions with the south-east Asian leaders.

He stated, “Today, I prevented a conflict using tariffs, the menace of duties,” continuing, “they are performing well. I believe they will be okay.”

Truce Deal Origins

Trump oversaw the signing of a ceasefire agreement, conducted in Malaysian territory this October, and has promoted it as one of several deals around the world he claims should win him the Nobel Peace prize.

The worst fighting in a ten years between Thai and Cambodian troops broke out in mid-summer, with gunfire, artillery and airstrikes leaving dozens of people killed and hundreds of thousands forced to flee.

Longstanding Border Dispute

The two neighboring countries have a longstanding border dispute that originates from conflicts regarding colonial-era maps drawn up by the French. Historic shrines along the frontier are claimed by both sides.
