Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Passion Provided England's Ace Sets Aside Egotism at the Door.

A single omission proved sufficient. A second one and it could have seemed vindictive from the England manager, a coach who is extremely shrewd not to know that claiming the World Cup trophy will likely need the involvement of the talented midfielder, even if it is equally up to the player to fit into the game plans and squad hierarchies necessary with the national team now that he is returned to the manager's welcoming fold.

The manager seeks his aggressive mentality, his fire, but it is a matter of channeling it appropriately. Personal talent is important but England know from bitter experience that there is a cost when fame takes over. Still, a statement has been delivered.

Bellingham had plenty to reflect on after being left out of the recent team selection. He observed England qualify at next summer’s World Cup in his absence. He saw Morgan Rogers perform brilliantly as a counterpressing No 10. He listened as Tuchel talk about loving the group’s energy and ethics. Inevitably, Bellingham has reacted in champion style, finding the back of the net for his club against their rivals and Juventus. He had to be picked; a second snub would have made his squad place precarious.

The expectation is that the manager will have a midfielder concentrating on intimidating opponents rather than his own colleagues. Ultimately, from a tactical perspective, there is no value to picking a fight with a top talent in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time on the sidelines has demonstrated that an international career is a precious, precarious thing. The coach, on his side, can now provide cover for the 22-year-old after showing that he is unafraid to take tough decisions.

“There is no problem regarding him, there is no problem with the character,” the German commented. “Jude displays that aggression. It takes that kind of fire to achieve greatness that he has. Everyone must help him and create a setting where he can channel his drive towards opponents and for the objectives we are building as a team.”

Bellingham dominated much of the focus at the manager's selection reveal for the upcoming final group games versus one opponent and Albania. Any other news? Indeed, how about another talent? Here is a further gifted playmaker in need of support and direction. Foden has not played for England since March and has found it hard to hit the heights recently but the boss was impressed by the player after his display in Manchester City’s win against the German side recently.

The question, however, is the best way to deploy the attacking talents at the team's disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze have earned their places and there will be compelling reasons to select another youngster once he is fit after a persistent groin problem. Is selecting several attacking midfielders to the tournament be too many? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the optimal mix at Euro 2024. He compromised by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the same XI, restricting Harry Kane’s influence in the process.

It seems unlikely the current manager doing similar if it harms the attacking balance. There is room for a single playmaker, with quick attackers on the flanks. Clarity helps. Bellingham is in as a No 10. The new call-up, selected for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the returning Wharton will compete with another player as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no position on the wing for the City star, who must play through the middle. Tuchel prefers him near the striker. “It is illogical to tell Foden: ‘You are needed in the team but there’s no space on your best position, can you play the left side? Or the other flank?’” he said. “He is to feature in the No 9-10ish position, through the center. I've long had this idea regarding him for a long time. In my view it matches his abilities best.”

Tuchel agreed there are occasions when Foden has not looked himself in an national jersey. “You feel as if, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And someone of his caliber who has such natural delight for the game, then clearly an issue exists, be it the position, the environment, I don’t know.

“In my opinion he is additionally accustomed to representing his club in a particular setup, with a defined role. I think he profits greatly from clarity. What is my position? In which positions am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? Where do I have to defend?

Tuchel mentioned Bellingham making runs for easy finishes and Foden scoring strikes from outside the box. He said he has a longlist of 60 players. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. A new face is rewarded for his excellent performances for City at left-back. Intrigue abounds.

Leaving out of Ollie Watkins means there is no direct replacement for the captain in the selection. Interestingly, Tuchel hinted at using Foden as a deep-lying striker versus Serbia or Albania. Other options, the United forward, the midfielder and Jarrod Bowen are other options if he be absent. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for trying new things.

At the same time, it is also a chance to develop the understanding with Bellingham going. It is remarkable that one must look back to Bellingham assisting Kane to score in a friendly win versus Scotland in September 2023 to discover the sole instance in many appearances for England when the pair combined for a goal. Tuchel will know that the two stars only exchanged the ball once during England’s draws with Denmark and another at the Euros. Their partnership is lacking.

“At this point eventually it becomes the responsibility of the players,” Tuchel said. He is not afraid to deliver home truths. There is still a feeling of the player under scrutiny. He may not be assured to begin versus Serbia and Albania. Tuchel desires Bellingham committed but he will be observing him carefully. Leave self-importance at the door. It will make a powerful squad into an even better one.
