Ultra-Conservative Former Lawmaker José Antonio Kast Elected as Chile's Next Leader.

Following a conclusive final ballot, ultra-conservative candidate José Antonio Kast has won the presidency in Chile.

A Clear-Cut Triumph

With over 99% of votes tallied, Kast secured 58.17% of the ballots, beating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.

This represents Kast's third bid for the presidency, having in the past been lost by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.

Campaign Centered On Law and Order and Immigration

Recognized for his strong Catholic views and praise for the period of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was largely built on promises to address rising crime and radically curb immigration.

He consistently pointed to foreigners, particularly the approximately 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for security issues. Throughout the election cycle, he gave an stern warning for them to exit before the new term begins or face removal.

His proposals included U.S.-style measures such as building detention centers, high walls, electric fences, and increasing the army presence on the northern border.

Part of a Broader Trend

Many analysts view Kast's success as part of a wider conservative trend in the region, coming after recent political results in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Yet, other experts also describe it as a extension of the regular rotation of power between left-wing and right administrations since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.

Governing Without a Clear Mandate
