Venus Williams, Receives Special Entry for Her Initial Melbourne Major in Half a Decade.

Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, which kicks off on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Return to Melbourne Park

Tournament officials announced on Friday that the 45-year-old legend will make a return at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. During 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the second round before bowing out in the quarter-finals to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

Venus had previously revealed in November her plans to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was likewise awarded a wild card, a fortnight prior to the Melbourne event. The Australian Open noted that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a week later, just before the start of play at Melbourne Park.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.
